Getaway

Such a great little getaway.. even though for only a night. It was cold but cosy. We had beers at the local, went for long walks, hung out in the spa and attempted to go fishing. Feeling refreshed.

Saturday

My morning has been spent sleeping in solo while Dave left for work reeeeaaally early, washing, tidying up, a bit of wedding stuff, a surprise visit from dad and just chilling at home. Packing up and heading down to Goolwa this afternoon for the rest of the weekend for some down time. What a nice little weekend.

Perspective

After leaving Slovenia and crossing the border in the middle of a night in May 1951, my grandparents reached a refugee camp where, out of anywhere in the world, they picked Australia. Knowing nothing about this faraway place, they got on a boat and reached a processing camp in Brisbane where they were married, along with 5 other couples, so that they would not be separated. They were sent to Adelaide with nothing but the clothes on their back, not knowing a word of English. They worked on a farm for a rich family in Loxton, with payment being the room in which they slept, which they later nursed my dad in as a baby, and a little cash, and they worked hard to learn the language. They eventually worked hard enough to buy their own house in Thebarton. Eventually word got back to Slovenia and their brothers and sisters came one after the other. They all stayed in this house to get set up before they all had enough money to buy their own land. There were no loans, you needed to own the land outright before you could build one of three house designs available. Now living in Clovelly Park, they worked long hours in factories, just trying to get by. They saved enough to buy a fish and chip shop. The women worked there all day while the men worked in the factory, and when they finished they'd go to the shop and peel potatoes. They never used a pen and paper, they just remembered the orders of the people who were lining up down the street to eat their amazing food. They worked these 14 hour days for 6 years. Without a break. Without a holiday. In fact, my grandfather never took a holiday in 30 years. Finally my grandparents save enough to buy a new, bigger home in Para Vista for their 3 kids and mother, and a truck, which earns them enough money that my grandmother doesn't have to work. She can just be a wife and a mother and a carer for the first time in her life. After years and years of struggle they are finally happy and comfortable in Australia. But just 7 years later my darling grandmother is diagnosed with Leukemia, and passes away at only 42 years old. My heartbroken grandfather continues working six days a week to raise his kids, including their 14 year old daughter, and retires at 73 only because his truck breaks down. All those years of struggle and heartache, their fierce love for their family made them push through it all to build a better life, for them.

I just thought I would share that little story with you. It doesnt even include the 24 years of war and poverty before they came to this country. Right now things in our life are a bit out of control and so, so, challenging. But after an afternoon coffee, a scotch finger biscuit and some story time with my amazing Nono, it puts things in perspective that things aren't that bad.. they're actually not bad at all. We have a roof over our heads and enough money to eat every single day. And, along with family, there is nothing else you need.

Smooth

I've been playing around with breakfast smoothies. This is one I made this morning.. 5 serves of fruit and veg right there. If only it looked as pretty as it does before it goes in the blender.

Hey

I picked up these pretties at the Salvos on Saturday for $16. I'm thinking some sort of black and white geo print for their revamp (excuse the dishes in the background).

Gotye

Heading to see Mr De Backer this evening at Her Majesty's Theatre. I must say its a pet hate when music I love gets all commercial.. but ill justify my admiration for Gotye by noting that this will be the fourth time I have seen him over the past five years. And I guess a muso has to make money somehow.

He really is a very talented man and I cant wait to see him in a seated show.

Crazy

Had a gathering for the AFL grand final at our place yesterday. A few bottles of jose cuervo, a hole in the wall, some Marley and a bunch of old mates. Funny night.

Woke up feeling like death and the house was trashed.. So went out for ciders with Feebs at Grace.
