Im going to make a...

QUILT! I have been thinking non stop about making a blanket for our spare bedroom. Since its winter, I thought ill learn to knit or crochet.. but then it came to me... surely its not that hard to make a patchwork quilt? Just sew a few squares together! ha! Fabric swatches from Duckcloth, design made in the high tech program Paint! (another flat out day in the office)

Last night was sister sleepover night, and we decided we were gonna snuggle up on the couch, watch Offspring and make friendship bracelets. I had no idea how to make them so we watched a couple YouTube tutes first... and here's my little creation! I would love to make a bunch for all my besties but this thing took forever and a day. Oh and fun fact about me - I have a bad love heart tattoo on my wrist and my sister has the same.. equally as bad, if not worse!

Bamboo Steamer Shelving

I thought I would share with you my latest craft project! The idea was totally stolen from Real Living Magazine this month, but I think mine turned out even better to be honest. So here goes.. my first real craft tutorial post!

Bamboo Steamer Shelving

1. Strip

I purchased 6 steamer bases from the Chinese Grocery Store right near the China Town entrance on Gouger Street. I think the total cost came in at about $67. Using gardening snips I cut off the bases. This is messy and a bit tedious for an impatient Aries like myself, but its best to do all the cutting first then pull the strips off after that.

2. Paint

I purchased a British Paints sample pot in Charcoal from Bunnings and after giving them a light sand, I started painting. I did a coat on the ‘exposed’ side, let that dry, turned them around and did the other side and let that dry, then turned them around again for one last coat to make sure it was all a-ok!

3. Adhere

Arrange the steamers in the shape you are after, making sure each one touches another one on at least 2 points. This is the part where having a tradie fiancé comes in handy! Raid the shed for clamps of any size, and then glue (I used wood glue, although RL mag suggested a hot glue gun) the steamers in the place you want them. Clamp them securely into place, then go to bed and try to control your excitement until the next morning when you can take off the clamps, hold it up and they are all stuck together!

4. Mount

Pick the place on the wall you want to mount your shelves and trace them onto the wall. You could probably do this a better way, but we decided on putting 4 screws into the wall, that would then sit into the little crevices on your shelving. Get big strong man (or yourself) to install plasterboard plugs and then the screws, then hopefully you can slip your shelf perfectly into place.. or you could fiddle around for 5 minutes trying to work out why it didn’t slip so perfectly into place… and then finally get it to work!

5. Style

Add a few random objects to spice it up a bit. I actually think it looks pretty awesome without anything in it too, but I added a cute Geisha moneybox my sis bought me, some flowers, books, a postcard of an Ellsworth Kelly painting and our TV remote! Then clean your room before taking photos to post on your blog...

So there you have it. My take on the Bamboo Steamer Shelves. I wish I didn’t have to go to work today so I could have stayed home and stared at them all day!

Im not joking

This is what i've been doing at work this afternoon:

And believe it or not, the two attempts I made at making a pretty little swan swallowed up a whole hour and a half!

Everyone knows I hate my job. I hate it. Is it really a job? More of a means to obtain funding to support my real life! How did a crafty girl like me end up in such a boring, ordinary, painfully brain frying job? A number of things.. I was a free spirited wild child who couldnt commit to staying home on a Saturday night let alone a degree (trust me, ive tried.. twice!), I dream too big and dont have the patience to get through the smaller bits first and the last 3 years of my life have been dedicated to Dave's building business..

So i've resorted to Origami. Um.. time to make some changes possibly!??

Whats your reader?

I have always read my blogs through Blogger - if your not a blogspot.com then sorry! I wouldnt even know if you can still follow non blogspot blogs through blogger?? But anyhoo.. One of my daily reads, See Jane Blog (im not entirely sure why I read this blog - but for some reason I love this hot 35 year old 'mom', all FOUR of her kids and the things they do in their perfect little life!) is moving to Wordpress. What does that mean for a Blogger user? Im not sure! But I've decided to give Bloglovin' a test run. I dont like Google Reader - its lacking any form of warmth to me... but please, blog readers out there, what reader do you use and why?! I wanna know!

Did you have a nice weekend? Mine was great! Me and Feebs checked out my cousins new cafe/bar Suzie Wong's Room on Friday night. OH MY GOD. I actually think the chicken lasagna was better than my mums. Amazing! Saturday had my hair done, then scoped out some Chinese Grocery stores for supplies for an up and coming project (watch this space). Saturday night went on a double date BOWLING with my sister and her boyf. Oh em gee they are so super cute. Love them! Yesterday involved the Coffee Barun for brekky with the Clutton's, a bit of wedding venue research, a cuppa and rub of Jess's HUGE belly (yay, shes almost here!), dinner at British India in the Thali Room and Ben Folds last night! Oh he was just great.. I have wanted to see him for years and he played an awesome set of all his oldies! So yep. Great weekend!

Totally addicted to... cards.

Did you know.. I am an avid collector of cards. Gift cards and postcards - I just love them. While I was stocking up in the San Francisco MOMA on our recent trip, Dave asked me why I love cards so much. I think its because they are a tiny bit of affordable art - even if I am having a tight ass week, I can usually raid the coin jar and run my eyes up and down the rows of pretty artworks and pick just one which stands out. Its the lightness, the texture of the quality card.. haha anyways.. here is my lunch time purchase from Fireflies:

My hot tips for the best gift card in Adelaide?

*Raw Space off Rundle Mall
*Bimbo on Rundle Street
*Lizards on the Fridge on Prospect Road
*Flourish on King William Road

Show and Tell

So I am in the second week of a short Floristry Course.. Something to do to keep my creative juices flowing whilst my brain fries in my boring old office job! Last night we did our first bouquet.. It wasn’t actually too bad. I must say, I was totally impressed with how well my flower selection worked together. I picked out white roses, with white spray carnations, with a type of wattle called Mount Morgan which ends up with tiny bright yellow flowers, as a filler. I also added some baby chrysanthemum's that were still green to give it a bit more edge.

Anyways, I think I did alright! I did break a couple roses (sad face) and learnt how easy it is for carnations to snap, but it was so much fun. And all the ladies in our group are super cute, especially our teacher, Irene, who has long grey hair, outrageous acrylics and always wears a velvet tracksuit! Here's a pic I quickly took this morning on my iphone..

Its raining and miserable in Adelaide today. I guess the good thing about all this rain is that after Winter comes Spring, and Spring means flowers! Look what I just found when I went to check out my Anemone's! I am super proud of myself and they have only barely hatched!

Hello Friday

I've been having a real BLEH kinda week. Feeling pretty down and out to be honest! Some serious anxiety is giving me a aching jaw and bad dreams and im feeling all depresso... wahhh..

So last night I had the bestest of best night with my bestie. God I love that girl to pieces! There she was, at 5pm, sitting in my work foyer, looking totally drop dead gorgeous in the cardi I bought her in the US. 2 jugs of beer and a burrito later, life could not have been better!

So this morning I got up super super early and went to the flower market before work to buy flowers for my mama and mother-in-law-to-be. Arent they just lovely? I hope you all have a lovely weekend full of amazing friends like mine MWAH! xxx

Hello, hello... im home. Sad face.

Yep. Here I am. Home and depressed. Why is it that holiday's do that to you? You have a fun fueled few weeks completely full to the brim of stuff to do, and then just like that, its over. You're back, with a bunch of amazing memories and a few extra kilos, and its time to catch up with your old friend reality.

On a lighter note, what a freaking amazing place America is! There is just so much going on over there. The thing that freaks me out the most is the amount of people just out and about. Just people everywhere! Especially NYC. And gosh that place is big.

Well, im not going to carry on about it too much cos honestly, im kinda over talking about it! But im back. And I am feeling a bit inspired to do more with my life.. A little less conversation!

Lovely to catch up on all my fave blogs though I must admit :)
